What Is Cholera?

Cholera is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Symptoms can develop quickly and may range from mild diarrhoea to severe dehydration requiring urgent medical treatment. Without prompt care, serious cases can become life-threatening.
Travellers visiting high-risk regions should take precautions to reduce their chances of infection.

Who Should Consider the Cholera Vaccine?

A cholera vaccination may be recommended if you are:
• Travelling to countries where cholera outbreaks occur regularly
• Visiting remote areas with limited medical facilities
• Working in humanitarian, aid, healthcare, or disaster-relief roles
• Staying for an extended period in regions with poor sanitation
• Visiting friends and family in high-risk destinations
Our travel health team will review your travel plans and provide personalised advice based on your destination and activities.

Cholera Vaccination

The cholera vaccine is administered orally as a drink rather than an injection.
Adults and Children Over 6 Years
• Two doses are required
• Doses are usually taken 1–6 weeks apart
• Protection can last for up to two years
Children Aged 2–6 Years
• Three doses may be required
• Additional booster doses may be recommended depending on future travel plans
For best protection, the vaccination course should be completed at least one week before departure.

How to Reduce Your Risk of Cholera While Travelling

Vaccination is only one part of staying protected. You should also:
• Wash your hands regularly with soap and clean water
• Drink bottled, boiled, or properly treated water
• Avoid ice unless you are certain it has been made with safe water
• Eat freshly cooked food that is served hot
• Avoid raw seafood and undercooked foods
• Peel fruits yourself whenever possible
• Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling to high-risk areas
